Define the five project management process groups of PMI's PMBOK.
There are five basic process groups used to conduct a successful project: Initiating; Planning; Executing; Controlling; and Closing. Initiating processes authorize the beginning or ending of a project or phase. Planning processes ensure that the objectives of the project are achieved in the most appropriate way. Executing processes coordinate all resources (people and material) during the implementation of the project plan. Controlling processes monitor for project variances from what was planned to actual progress. Closing processes formally accept the project or phase and update project information base with lessons learned.
Define the nine knowledge areas of PMI's PMBOK.
A knowledge area describes the project management knowledge in terms of its component processes. The nine knowledge areas are: Integration Management; Scope Management; Time Management; Cost Management; Quality Management; Human Resources Management; Communication Management; Risk Management; Procurement Management. They represent the body of knowledge that a project manager must have in order to consistently deliver successful projects that meet a customer's expectations for scope, time, cost, and quality of the project deliverables.
Explain the importance of the Project Management Institute (PMI).
PMI was founded in 1969 for the following reasons: to create a forum for project managers to discuss emerging concepts and practices; to officially recognize project management as a profession in and of itself; and to bring together people from all branches of project management to share and learn from each other.
Define Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
PMBOK describes the sum of knowledge with the profession of project management, including knowledge of proven traditional practices that are widely applied as well as knowledge of innovative and advanced practices.
Describe the structure of the project management framework, according to PMI's PMBOK.
The framework is structured around five process groups which are made up of component processes consisting of tools, techniques, and outcomes organized within nine knowledge areas.
Define Integration Management and describe its component processes?
Integration Management is one of the nine knowledge areas of PMI's PMBOK. It describes the processes and methods required to identify, define, combine, unify, and coordinate the various processes with all of the other eight knowledge areas. Component processes are develop project charter, develop project management plan, direct and manage project execution, monitor and control project work, perform integrated change control, and close project or phase.
Define Scope Management and describe its component processes?
Scope Management is one of the nine knowledge areas of PMI's PMBOK. It describes the processes and methods required to ensure that the project delivers exactly what the customer requested and only what the customer requested to create a successful project. Component processes are collect requirements, define scope, create WBS, verify scope, and control scope.
List and describe the three major deliverables produced by the project initiation process.
As illustrated in figure 3-5 in the text, the initiating group applies to the integration management knowledge area and the communication management knowledge area. It consists of project initiation. The three major deliverables of project initiation are: project charter; stakeholder register; stakeholder management strategy. The project charter formally authorizes the project or phase. The stakeholder register is a document that summarizes all of the stakeholders impacted by the project. The stakeholder management strategy is a document outlining specific strategies needed to ensure the project manager maximizes positive stakeholder influence and minimizes negative stakeholder influence.
What is a WBS and where does the process of creating it fall in the process groups and knowledge areas?
The work breakdown structure (WBS) is a deliverable-oriented grouping of project components that organizes and defines the total scope of the project. As with the scope statement, the WBS is often used to develop or confirm a common understanding of project scope among stakeholders. The WBS defines each outcome or deliverable that is required to build the product. Creating the WBS falls in the planning process group in Scope Management knowledge area.
Describe the deliverables of scope planning and scope definition.
As a result of scope planning and scope definition, three major deliverables are produced: requirements document; scope statement; work breakdown structure (WBS). In addition, the WBS dictionary is produced to support the WBS. The requirements document describes how each requirement meets a business need for the project. The scope statement provides a documented basis for making future project decisions and for confirming or developing a common understanding of project scope among the stakeholders. The WBS defines each outcome or deliverable that is required to build the product, and its dictionary provides further details of the work packages and control accounts.
