Habituation is a decreased response to a stimulus after it has been repeated several times, dishabituation is the increase of responsiveness when a sensation is changed. An example would be when a parent plays peek-a-boo with an infant and the infant slowly loses interest as the action is repeated (habituation), if the parent suddenly puts a toy in front of their face they will have a renewed interest in the object (dishabituation). These concepts are significant because they show that the infant is learning from their environment.
