QUALITATIVERESEARCH- a naturalistic method of inquiry of researchwhich deals with the issue of human complexityby exploring it directly (Polit and Beck, 2008)- qualitative research puts an emphasis onhuman complexity and man’s ability to decideand create his or her own experience- focuses on gaining insights and understandingabout an individual’s perception andinterpretationofevents.Comparison between Quantitative andQualitative ResearchQuantitative ResearchoAims to characterize trends andpatternsoUsually starts with neither a theory norhypothesis about the relationshipbetween two or more variables oUses structured research instrumentslike questionnaires or schedules oUse large sample sizes that arerepresentatives of the population oHas high output replicability oUsed to gain greater understanding ofgroup similaritiesoUses structured processes oMethods include census, survey, experiments and secondary analysisQualitative ResearchoInvolves processes, feelings, andmotives (the why’s and the how’s) andproduces in depth and holistic dataoUsually, concerned with generatinghypothesis from data rather thantesting a hypothesisoUse either unstructured or semi-structured instrumentsoUses small sizes chosen purposelyoHas high validityoUsed to gain greater understanding ofindividual differences in terms offeelings, motives and experiences.oUses more flexible processoMethods include field research, casestudy and secondary analysisCharacteristics of Qualitative Research It is systematic and rigorous. It follows an iterative process, whichmeans that data collection and analysisoccur simultaneously. Data alreadycollected are updated by the ongoingdata collection It focuses on people who provide therichest insights.Collection of data is continuous untilsaturation or when it reaches to thepoint where no new information isrevealed with respect to the key themesemerging from the dataIt examines experiences in a naturalcontext. The Value of Qualitative ResearchQualitative data provides context andmeaning. The value of qualitative study comesfrom its focus on the lived experience ofthe participants, which enablesdevelopmentofagreaterunderstandingconcerningtheoutcomes that are important, relevantand meaningful to the people involved Common Types of Qualitative Researchbased on the different fields of inquiry (Merriamas cited in Cristobal and Dela Cruz-Cristobal,2017)1.Phenomenological study– seeks to findthe essence or structure of anexperience by explaining how complexmeanings are build out of simple unitsof inner experience. It examines humanexperiences (lived experiences) throughthe descriptions provided by thesubjects or respondents.
Example: What are the common experiencesencountered by a person with spousewho is positive with COVID19?
