Exempt patient specimen packages must comply with which Packing Instruction number

Before an empty packaging is returned to the consignor, or sent elsewhere, it must be disinfected or sterilized to nullify any hazard and any label or marking indicating that it contained an infectious substance must be removed or obliterated.

For liquid specimens, the outer container must not contain more than a total of 4 liters (L) (excluding ice or dry ice used to keep specimens cold). For solid specimens, the outer container must not contain more than a total of 4 kilograms (kg).

NOTE: The proper shipping name for UN 3245 is “GENETICALLY MODIFIED MICRO- ORGANISMS” or "GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS".
