What are the nursing responsibilities during bone marrow aspiration?

ASPIRATION AND BIOPSY of the bone marrow are performed to evaluate hematologic disorders. Nursing responsibilities include preparing and educating the patient, assessing him for complications, supporting him during the procedure, and assisting the practitioner.

How is bone marrow aspiration performed?

What happens during a bone marrow aspiration?.
Inserts a hollow needle into your pelvic bone..
Attaches a syringe to the needle to withdraw a sample of bone marrow liquid..
Removes the needle and syringe..
Places a bandage over the area to prevent infection and promote healing..

What would be primary nursing concerns for a patient post procedure bone marrow biopsy?

Bleeding and infection may result from bone marrow biopsy at any site, but the most serious complications occur at the sternum. Such complications are rare but include puncture of the heart and major vessels, causing severe hemorrhage, and puncture of the mediastinum, causing mediastinitis of pneumomediastinum.

Can nurses perform bone marrow biopsy?

Based on national and local evidence it is recognized that an RN who has satisfactorily completed an instructional program/supervised clinical practice in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, can safely perform bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
