What is the name of the area of the desktop that contains shortcuts of apps and services?

At the top of the screen is the menu bar and at the bottom is the Dock. In between is what’s called the desktop. The desktop is where you do your work.

Change the desktop picture

You can choose a different macOS desktop picture—dynamic ones automatically change throughout the day—or use one of your own photos. See Customize the desktop picture.

Change the desktop appearance

You can choose a light or dark appearance for the menu bar, desktop picture, Dock, and built-in apps. See Use a light or dark appearance.

Use notifications on the desktop

Notifications appear in the top-right corner of the desktop to let you know about upcoming events, incoming emails or messages, and more; you can ask for a reminder, reply to a message, and more, right from the notification. You can customize how and when notifications appear. To pause them when you need to concentrate on a task, turn on a Focus.

Organize files on the desktop

If you like to keep files handy on the desktop, you can use stacks to neatly group files by type or other criteria along one side of the desktop—whenever you add a file to the desktop, it automatically goes into a stack. See Use desktop stacks.

Find a window on the desktop

If your desktop is covered by open windows, you can use Mission Control to move them aside to get to the desktop, or to show a simple view of everything that’s open on the desktop, so it’s easy to spot the window you need. See See open windows and spaces in Mission Control.

Use multiple desktops

You can create additional desktop spaces to organize tasks on specific desktops. For example, you can manage email on one desktop while focusing on a project using another desktop, and easily switch between the two. You can even customize each desktop to suit the task you’re working on. See Work in multiple spaces.

What’s a shortcut?

A shortcut provides a quick way to get things done with your apps, with just a click or by asking Siri.

Shortcuts can automate a wide variety of things—for example, getting directions to the next event on your Calendar, moving text from one app to another, generating expense reports, and more.

Based on how you use your Apple devices—your app usage and your browser, email, and messaging history—Siri suggests simple, useful shortcuts that you can quickly click to run. Once you create a shortcut, you can activate Siri, then say the shortcut’s name to run it.

What’s an action?

An action is the building block of a shortcut. Each shortcut comprises a series of actions, and each action is a single step that performs a particular function. For example, a shortcut that shares an animated GIF might contain three consecutive actions: Get Latest Photos grabs the latest photos that you took on your device, Make GIF uses those photos to build an animated GIF, and Send Message automatically sends the GIF to your recipients.

Actions represent the best features of the apps on your Apple devices, broken out into smaller parts. With hundreds of actions, there are a variety of individual steps you can chain together to build shortcuts.

Where are shortcuts stored?

In the Shortcuts app, shortcuts are organized in collections in the app sidebar:

• All Shortcuts: Contains all of your shortcuts and shortcuts available in apps.

• Share Sheet: Contains shortcuts that are available in the share sheet of another app.

• Quick Actions: Contains shortcuts that appear in the Quick Actions menu in the macOS Finder.

• Menu Bar: Contains shortcuts that appear in the Shortcuts menu in the macOS menu bar.

When you tap a collection name in the sidebar, all shortcuts in that collection are shown in a grid array. Each shortcut is represented by a rounded rectangle that has a title, an icon, and a color. Click
