The Sylvan Hill Park Bike Trails closed for the season on Saturday November 19, 2022. Show General Information: This loop trail system has approximately three miles of trails with four downhill options for riders with different skill levels. This bike park includes a pump track, a small skills area to help riders hone their abilities and the large loop system circling the park. To access the trail system riders should park in the trailhead parking lot at 3298 Coates Lane, Wausau. This lot is located at the top of Sylvan Hill in the very southeast corner of the property. Some of the trails require advanced riding and jumping skills. There are signs explaining difficulty levels, and 'filter' features at the beginning of the more difficult runs. If a rider can traverse the filter jumps, they should feel comfortable riding the rest of that run. Sylvan Hill Park is multi-use and includes a number of hiking trails. Bikers please be courteous and yield to all pedestrians. At this time there is a donation box at the trailhead but no required fee; there will likely be a fee required in the future.

Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area: October 13, 2022 News Release: Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has announced that all trails in the Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area will close for the season on Saturday, October 15, 2022 to all mountain biking and horseback riding. The trails will open again between May 1 and May 15, 2023, contingent upon spring trail conditions. Mountain biking and horseback riding activities remain open in the other Marathon County Forest Units and Big Eau Pleine County Park. Mountain biking is also still available at the Sylvan Hill Bike Trails and the Ringle Landfill bike trails. General Information: Nine Mile bike trails close annually for the season on October 15. Each spring when the trail system opens, it opens at noon daily from May 1 (or whatever date the trails open in May) through the last day of the spring turkey season. Please avoid any wet trail sections to minimize trail damage. Located just 15 minutes west of Wausau, this developed recreation area offers miles of off-road mountain biking opportunities. There are 13.45 miles of single-track trails and 20 miles of 12' wide trails (the cross-country ski trails) ranging from beginner to expert level. This area hosts several major mountain bike races each year including the Wausau 24 and the Wausau Classic. The bike fee area includes all trails at Nine Mile Forest; single-track, cross-country ski, and snowmobile trails. Class 1 and Class 3 pedal assist electric mountain bikes (eMTB) are allowed at Nine Mile and all other County Forest lands during open biking season. Class 2 throttle type electric mountain bikes are prohibited. In general, the Nine Mile Bike trails opens for the season when the trail system has adequately dried up. Typically this is May 1 - 15. Each year this website will be updated when officials have determined when the trails will open. After the trail system opens, they will open at noon daily through the end of the spring Turkey hunting season which runs well into May. Each year the dates change slightly.
Directions: 221700 Red Bud Road, From US 51/I-39 take Exit 188 and drive west on County Road N 3.5 mile to south on Red Bud Road 1.25 miles to the chalet parking lot on the west side of the road. When approaching from the west take County Road N east to Red Bud Road (approximately 9 miles east of State Highway 107). Trail Fees: 12 years and older $5 Daily or $30 Annual Sticker; FREE 11 years and younger. There are several self-registration stations throughout Nine Mile including the chalet parking lot on Red Bud Road, the Hollywood Road parking lot located on the west side of the property, and the Fawn Road parking lot located on the southeast side of the property. The bike fee area includes all trails at Nine Mile Forest; single-track, cross-country ski, and snowmobile trails. Annual passes may also be purchased at the Park Administrative Office, 212 River Drive, Suite 2, Wausau, M-F, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Season: Trails open between May 1 and May 15 depending on trail conditions and remain open through October 15 annually. If the trails are open in May the first three weeks they open daily at noon to allow for spring turkey hunters to have a quality hunt. The dates change slightly each year. Trails close annually October 15 to allow for small game and deer hunting activities. Big Eau Pleine Park: Season: Bike Trails are allowed on the trails annually on May 1 unless wet trail conditions warrent a later start. Bike Trails remain open through the fall and winter (snowbiking is allowed throughout the winter season) and close on March 15, or when the spring thaw arrives, whichever comes first. CWOCC will be grooming the snow bike trails thoughout the season upon each 5 inch snowfall. The Park Department may post trails closed signs as applicable throughout the year. Horse Trails are generally open to the public annually on May 1 unless wet trail conditions warrent a later start. Horse Trails are open through October 31 annually. Located just 15 minutes southwest of Mosinee this large park offers 10 miles of trails shared with hikers, bikers, and horses. A large parking lot is available across from the A-Frame Park Managers office and is the trailhead heading east and west from that point. All of the trails are granite based. Frequent deer and other wildlife sightings can be made while on these trails that meander through hardwoods and with periodic views of the Big Eau Pleine Flowage. From Wausau take US 51/I39 south 12 miles to STH 153, STH 153 west 8 miles to Eau Pleine Park Road, Eau Pleine Park Road south 3 1/2 miles to park entrance. The park is approximately 4 miles west of Moon. Trail Fees: FREE Mountain-Bay State Park Trail: The Friends of the Mountain-Bay Trail is looking for volunteers to serve on their board in leadership or support staff positions. The Mountain-Bay Trail is a Wisconsin State Park Trail that occupies the former Chicago and Northwestern Railroad right-of-way between Wausau and Green Bay. The entire 83.4-mile trail extends from Marathon County through Shawano County and into Brown County ending just west of Green Bay in the Village of Howard. The trail travels through a variety of agricultural, forest, and wetland landscapes that exhibit many of the glacial landforms in Wisconsin. The trail links with the Ice Age National Recreation Trail in Marathon County, the Wiouwash Trail in Shawano County, and a network of trails in Brown County.
Access points include the Weston, Ringle, Marathon County Landfill and Norrie trailheads each of which have parking lots and self-registration stations for trail passes. The self-registration stations have envelopes for you to complete and pay the $5 daily fee at any time. Marathon County trail tread is crushed, compacted limestone. Directions (Google Map) to Weston Trailhead: 5501 Municipal Street. From Wausau take STH 29 east 3 miles to Camp Phillips Road, Exit 173. North on Camp Phillips Road 1/2 mile to CTH JJ. More Biking Opportunities Winter Snow Bike Trails: New Opportunity - Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area: The 2022-2023 Winter Fat Tire Bike season is being conducted as a trial season of the new use at Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area. These trails will open to Fat Tire Bikes (with a minimum width of 3.8 inch) in conjunction with the opening of the Cross Country Ski Trails on or after December 12th, 2022 based on snow conditions. Annual passes are available on our CivicRec Website or at the main Park Office. Nine Mile Daily Passes (12 and older) are available at Nine Mile for $5.00. Nine Mile Winter Fat Tire Bike Trail Map Update November 17, 2022 - To keep our park forests healthy, a timber harvest will be taking place at Big Eau Pleine Park starting today. While the loggers are working and/or barricades are in place the single-track biking trails within the harvest area will be closed. Please go to the CWOCC website to see the temporary trail closures. Timber Sale Map, Timber Sale details Big Eau Pleine Park Snow Bike Trail System: Big Eau Pleine Park is now home to a 10 mile groomed snow bike trail system. This trail system is designated for bikes with tire width of 3.7 inches or greater. The Central Wisconsin Offroad Cycling Coalition (CWOCC) partnered with the Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department to make this opportunity available. A large parking lot is available across from the A-Frame Park Managers office and is the trailhead with trails heading east and west from that point. CWOCC will be grooming the trails after each 5" snowfall. Periodic grooming updates for Big Eau Pleine trails will be posted on the CWOCC facebook page. Some of the horse trails are groomed for snow bike so be aware of this while you are on this multi-use trail.
