Darts legend Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor retired from professional darts in 2018 but made a shock return earlier this year for the World Senior Darts Championship back in February.

It was assumed that this was set to be a one-off for Taylor, who was making his first tournament appearance for four years, until he was then present at the inaugural event for the 2022 World Seniors Darts Masters last month, prompting questions over his future.

Here is all you need to know about Phil Taylor, including why he came out of retirement and whether or not he is set to feature at another tournament this year.

Who is Phil Taylor?

Phil Taylor is the richest and most successful darts player in history, who racked up an eye-watering net worth of $10 million (£7.9 million) after winning 214 professional tournaments during his career, which included a record 85 major titles and a record 16 World Championships.

Nicknamed ‘The Power’, Taylor dominated darts for over two decades after winning eight consecutive World Championships from 1995 to 2002 and held the world number one ranking for a total of thirteen years, including eight in a row between 2006–2013.

The 61-year-old, born in Burslem in Stoke-on-Trent, has broken a number of records during his playing career, such as becoming the first person to hit two nine-dart finishes in the same match, while his three-dart average per match records were the highest in the game’s history.

Has Phil Taylor retired?

Taylor announced his retirement from professional darts after the 2018 World Championship, in which he made it all the way to the final before losing to Rob Cross. He labelled the game as a “miss-match” due to the differences in their ages, and said he no longer had the energy or interest to continue competing.

However, in April 2021, it was announced that ‘The Power’ would be coming out of retirement to feature as the headline name in the inaugural edition of the 2022 World Senior Darts Championship, held in London, in what would be his first competitive appearance in four years, but his darts return ended in a 3-0 quarter-final defeat at the hands of Kevin Painter.

Taylor then also featured in the inaugural edition of the 2022 World Seniors Darts Masters at the end of May, in which he made it through three rounds before being defeated 6-3 in the final by David Cameron. As things stand, it is unsure as to whether these were simply one-off appearances from the darts legend.

Will Taylor make an official return to darts?

The Power dropped a hint over his potential future after his quarter-final exit at the World Senior Darts Championship in February, in which he vowed to retire “fully” if his game didn’t improve, although his run to the final of the World Senior Darts Masters last month would certainly suggest that.

However, Taylor has admitted that he is loving the tension in the practice room which takes him back in time. Speaking to Online Darts TV, he said: “It’s like the old days. It’s not like these youngsters today where they put their iPods in their ears. We’re getting proper arguments, it’s brilliant.”

He also added: “I’ve tried everything [since losing to Painter]. I’m trying to lift the roof off the building. Even now, doing an interview, I’m trying to lift the roof off the building because I’m not used to it. I’m trying to say the right things, do the right things. It’s so difficult.”
